LATAM Cargo and MVD Free Airport officially inaugurate BRU-MVD frequency
Focused on the handling of pharmaceutical products and GDP compliant, the route will connect Brussels and Montevideo on a weekly basis.
Representing a new milestone in Uruguay’s strengthened positioning as a logistic gateway to South America, LATAM Cargo and MVD Free Airport inaugurate a new route that connects Brussels Airport with Montevideo Airport directly and on a weekly basis starting september 2018.
Designed to attend the growing needs of the pharmaceutical industry, the route counts with CEIV Pharma Certified gateways and airline with goods being transported in a Boeing 767-300F. This provides an overall service level up to the global standards of the pharmaceutical industry and the possibility for global shippers to enter the region via Uruguay with its proven benefits in terms of simplicity, efficiency and reduction of overall lead times and costs. This new frequency complements the existing frequencies from Europe adding a highly competitive and pharma-focused outbound gateway as is Brussels, and augmenting MVD Free Airport’s positioning as the most competitive location for regional distribution in South America.

Jorge Baccino, Latam Cargo General Manager, highlighted the joint effort put forth by MVD Free Airport, the Carrasco International Airport, Brussels Airport and Pharma Aero, and the benefits that this inauguration brings forth. “As leaders in airfreight transportation we have the responsibility to continue connecting the region with the world, and this new route is clear evidence of our commitment to Latinamerica”, he mentioned. The operation will count with 50 ton capacity and 300m3 of available space. He concluded that “This route becomes LATAM Cargo’s third to Montevideo” while he expressed satisfaction for LATAM Cargo being “the first airline in America to obtain the CEIV Pharma certification granted by IATA”.

Carrasco Airport is the first of the region with a solar photovoltaic generation plant.
The implementation of the Energy Plan reduced the carbon footprint of the air terminal and allowed to receive Certification in Environmental Management.
Ratifying its commitment to transform the Carrasco Airport into an energy-efficient space, Corporación América, group to which MVD Free Airport belongs, concessionaire of the air terminal, inaugurated a modern solar photovoltaic generation plant. The installation positions the airport as the first in Latin America, which has a own energy generation system.
The plant, with a capacity of 0.5 MW, is part of the Project of Energy Efficiency that the air terminal carries out and includes the replacement of Led luminaires and the installation of heat pumps and free cooling for thermal conditioning.
In its first stage, the solar plant occupies a one hectare plot at entrance of the terminal and consists of 1,540 photovoltaic panels distributed in seven rows from north to south. Its metal structure has state-of-the-art solar tracking technology, which allows the movement of the panels during the day and a 30% improvement from the sun’s energy to traditional fixed panels.
The project is aligned with the goals outlined by the terminal in terms of sustainability and with the global order issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (OACI) to work for mitigate the carbon footprint and prevent pollution by 2030, when the number of passengers by aircraft is expected to double.
The professional technical team operated in a linked way with the Ministry of Industry Energy and Mining, the National Bureau of Energy, UTE, and the Control Unit of the National Bureau of Civil Aviation and Aeronautical Infrastructure (Dinacia) of the Ministry of National Defence to make the installation viable, and finally it was built by a consortium of Smart Green Uruguay and Ciemsa.
During the inauguration, in the presence of National and Regional authorities as well as the company authorities; Diego Arrosa – CEO of Corporación America in Uruguay, highlighted the work done together with the institutions and reaffirmed the airport’s commitment to energetic efficiency.
“For Carrasco Airport, it is a source of pride and also of responsibility to be the first in Latin America to have its own solar power generation plant. The great work done by the professionals and the authorities that worked on its development reaffirms the leadership of the terminal inside and outside borders to transmit the importance of using resources responsibly, generating a minimum impact on the environment and improve energy efficiency “, affirmed Arrosa.
The implementation of the project allowed to reduce the carbon footprint of the terminal, which obtained the certification of the Program of Carbon Certification Level 1 of the International Council ofAirports (ACI-World), in addition to ISO 14064-1, a standard of environmental management in which reports of greenhouse gas emissions are voluntarily verified.
With this initiative, Carrasco Airport fulfills its objectives of improve efficiency and generate renewable energy, the two pillars of the company plan to develop a clean, safe and environmentally friendly system.The installation of the solar plant is added to various actions developed in recent years such as the implementation the new air conditioning system, and confirms the commitment of the terminal to become Green Airport.

MVD Free Airport Executes Phase 2 of its Cold Chain Warehousing Master Plan
Given the increasing demand of global pharmaceutical shippers currently selecting Uruguay and MVD Free Airport in particular as a gateway for South American distribution, MVD Free Airport is commencing the development of the phase 2 of its Cold Chain Warehousing Master Plan. This entails a new state-of-the-art cold chain warehouse to add to its existing capacity in order to service existing and future demands for its regional distribution operations.

Opens New Latin American Headquarters and Operating Facility in Uruguay
va-Q-tec further expands its international presence with a new Latin American head office and operations facility in Montevideo.
The new site will function as a key hub for va-Q-tec’s rental services and as a fulfillment station from July 2018 onwards. MVD Free Airport present in 2018’s FlyPharma Europe Conference
MVD Free Airport was Present in 2018’s FlyPharma Conference, which took place this past June in Brussels, Belgium.

MVD Free Airport and Brussels Airport Advance on the Establishment of a Dedicated Europe-South America Pharma Route
MVD Free Airport and Brussels Airport formalized their efforts in the development of a dedicated pharma route between Brussels and South America, addressing the increasing interest received from several global pharmaceutical shippers. The peak season for inbound cargo to South America, usually starting September through January, represents a real challenge for pharmaceutical shippers. Not only are costs increasing dramatically but it is highly difficult to achieve any type of foreseeability and reliability, this having many implications not only from an SCM but also a quality and security perspective., Nathan De Valck, Director of Business Development at Brussels Airport stated“Together with MVD Free Airport we’ve identified the need and are working towards the implementation of a dedicated pharma certified route, with reliable, cost-efficient weekly frequencies based on regular wide-body freighters.”.
“The benefits of such a route are many”, mentioned Bruno Guella, Managing Director at MVD Free Airport. “Not only can cargo arrive predictably and cost-efficiently from Europe and the US to South America entering via Montevideo, Uruguay, strategically located between Brazil and Argentina, but the last mile distribution can be tailored to client needs. Some shippers prefer reaching Brazil via truck leading to faster clearances at the dry border. Others prefer shipments via truck to Buenos Aires, to ensure traceability and temperature stability all the way to the bonded warehouse. Others just put focus on replenishing their small security stocks at our airport free zone to perform late customization activities two minutes away from the tarmac and for agile distribution by plane to the rest of the region. The possibilities are many”.
MVD Free Airport and Brussels Airport are currently in the latter stages of the product development phase. “So far this has gone really well, over a dozen pharma shippers have expressed interest and shared their yearly volumes, the business case is looking attractive. We believe we will be in a position to present product details to the industry very shortly and are looking at September as a tentative implementation date”, added Guella.
